The General Assembly of the United Nations by a resolution, A/RES/51/162 Dated 30 th January, 1997 adopted the model law of electronic commerce adopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. This resolution recommended inter- alia that all the States give favourable consideration to the said model law when they enact or revise their laws, in view of the need for uniformity of the law applicable to alternatives to paper-based methods of communication and storage of information.

On 16 th December, 1999 the Government of India introduced Cyber Law Legislation in Lok Sabhba to bring out a law of electronic commerce for electronic governance in the country which got the assent of the President of India on 09/06/2000. The motto of this Act is to provide a legal recognition for the transactions entered into by means of electronic data which is generally called as Electronic Commerce. The IT Act, 2000 brought about significant amendments to the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, the Banker's Book Evidence Act, 1891 and the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. This Act removed the hurdles which stood in the way of electronic commerce and electronic governance. This Act directs all the Government Departments to accept the electronic record, as the Act provides for equal treatment of users of electronic communications and paper based communications.

Schedule - I (Sec 90):

Amendments to the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860) are: Sec 29-A is inserted after Sec 29. Sec 167, 172, 173, 175, 192, 204, 463, 464, 466,468, 469, 470, 471, 474, 476, 477A have been thoroughly amended.

Schedule - II (Sec 91):

Amendments to the Indian Evidence Act are: Sec 3, 17, insertion of Sec 22A after Sec 22, 34, 35, 39, insertion of 47-A after Sec 47, 59, Sec 65-A, 65-B after Sec 65, 67A after Sec 67, 73A after 73, 81A after 81, 85A, 85B, 85C after 85, 88A after 88, 90A after 90 and 131.

Schedule - III (Sec 92):

Amendments to the Bankers Books Evidence Act, 1891 are: Sec 2(a) Clause (3) and Clause (8), insertion of Sec 2A after Sec 2.

Schedule - IV (Sec 93):

Amendment to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 (2 of 1934): Clause (pp) is inserted after Clause (p) of Sub-Sec 2 in Sec 58.
